World War I Remembrance

The Remembrance Poppy

The red field poppy became the internationally recognized symbol of Remembrance.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

The Last Post

Every night at 8.00pm the Last Post ceremony takes place under the Menin Gate in Ypres.
When the buglers step onto the roadway under the memorial arch, the noise of traffic ceases and a stillness descends over the memorial.
They play the Last Post, followed by a short silence and the Reveille to conclude the ceremony.
